12 Step Programs You Might Not Have Heard Of
Everyone is familiar with Alcoholics Anonymous, the renowned 12 step program that has helped millions of people all over the world with their recovery from alcohol addiction by providing education and a strong support structure to all its members. By advising its members to submit to a "higher power" and admit that they are powerless against the substance or behavior in question, these twelve step programs help people focus on the things they can change in their lives. Founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson, Alcoholic Anonymous would eventually give birth to a host of other, similarly-structured programs designed to help those struggling with addiction. Other Twelve Step Programs
Al-Anon. Provides needed support for families who have a loved one with an addiction.
Alateen. As you might guess from the name, this group provides support specifically for teenagers who have a family member struggling with addiction.
Debtors Anonymous. Provides support for those who are unable to control their spending. This group caters to compulsive shoppers who have incurred large debts and put their family's finances at risk.
Gamblers Anonymous. Gambling is a serious addiction which strikes a large number of people around the world. Those who are addicted to gambling are unable to play casually at a casino or engage in any type of betting without being at risk.
Marijuana Anonymous. Although there is considerable debate about the addictive nature of marijuana, there is no denying that many pot smokers are unable to stop using. This group provides support for those engaged in trying to quit.
Narcotics Anonymous. NA provides education and peer group support for those recovering from addictions to drugs such as heroin, cocaine, crystal meth, prescription medications and other substances.
Overeaters Anonymous. Secretive eating and binge eating are just two of the issues this group helps individuals confront.
Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous. One of the more recent additions to the 12 step program canon, SLAA helps people who often engage in dangerous sexual behaviors cope with, and find solutions to their problem.
