According to the Center for Disease Control, alcohol abuse costs thousands of people their lives each year. Alcoholism can strike men and women of all ages and different cultures or socio-economic groups. As such, not every alcohol abuse treatment program is right for everyone. In fact, those individuals who are able to find the right program stand a much better chance at achieving success.

What are the Major Alcohol Abuse Treatment Methods?

There are several different ways that an individual can engage in alcohol abuse treatment. These methods may speak to different lifestyles or medical needs.

  • Residential Alcohol Abuse Treatment. Sometimes, the most effective course of action is to remove the individual from their potentially harmful environment and give them a place where they can focus solely on their recovery from alcoholism. This is the driving theory behind residential alcohol abuse treatment. Residential alcohol rehab programs represent a “safe place” when the individual can become totally immersed in their recovery.
  • Outpatient Alcohol Abuse Treatment. As powerful a solution as residential alcohol abuse treatment is, many people cannot simply afford to drop everything in their lives (family responsibilities, work, school, etc.) in order to move into a treatment facility full time. Outpatient care has individuals attending treatment during the day -but then returning home or to a sober living facility in the evening. This is an outstanding choice for those who really benefit from being close to their support system while trying to achieve recovery.
  • Holistic Alcohol Abuse Treatment. Alcohol treatment programs that are incorporating holistic methods into their core program are rapidly growing in popularity. Holistic methods commonly used in alcohol abuse treatment include yoga, meditation, exercise, nutritional counseling and acupuncture. In their own unique way, each of these holistic treatment methods enhances wellness – thereby putting the individual in a better frame of mind for other aspects of their treatment. It is important to note that most programs use holistic methods in conjunction with other, more modern treatment modalities. This provides a comprehensive treatment program that truly speaks to every aspect of the individual (and not just their addiction).
  • Dual Diagnosis Alcohol Abuse Treatment. When an individual suffers from both alcoholism and a co-occurring mental illness, that person is referred to as a dual diagnosis patient. These individuals are at a high-risk for a number of issues including suicide. They are also harder to treat because each condition complicates the other (and symptoms tend to overlap making them hard to identify) and as such requires integrated care from both addiction psychiatric and addiction treatment professionals working together to assess and treat all aspects of the individual’s condition.
