Alcohol Rehab Aftercare

The aftercare services available to you after you successfully complete alcohol rehab can be the difference between maintaining sobriety after you return home and relapse. The ultimate goal of all alcohol rehab programs is sustained abstinence and for this purpose, you learn relapse prevention as a part of your addiction treatment program. When you leave the rehab facility, you have a number of choices in aftercare services to assist you in implementing the relapse prevention techniques that you learned during treatment.

At Michael's House, we offer a number of aftercare services and solutions, including onsite sober living. If you would like to learn more about how to enroll in our sober living program or alcohol rehab, contact us at Michael's House today.

Alcohol Rehab Aftercare: Onsite Services

Onsite alcohol rehab aftercare services usually consist of two options: weekly alumni support group sessions and sober living facilities. Alumni support group sessions are open to those who have successfully graduated from the program. They allow you to maintain the network of support that you built during treatment and to keep in contact with the counselors and therapists that you connected with during your time at your alcohol addiction treatment program.

Sober living facilities are another onsite aftercare option. These homes are usually on the same site as the original alcohol rehab and allow you to continue to live in the protected environment of like minded peers and counseling support without the structured scheduled treatments that come with treatment. You will be expected to maintain the rules of the house—keeping up with your chores, not bringing alcohol and/ or drugs into the house, attending house meetings and 12 step meetings, et cetera—but you will be encouraged to get a job and begin the transition to your own home outside of the rehab setting.

Alcohol Rehab Aftercare: Offsite Services

Alcohol rehab offsite services are an option for those who live far away from their alcohol rehab. They allow you to check in with your counselor or therapist by phone or email in order to get continued support as you begin to rebuild your life outside of treatment.

In some cases, it will be appropriate for you to obtain referrals for therapists and doctors in your area so that you can continue the treatment you started during alcohol rehab. You will need to obtain these before you leave, but if you need another one, you can always ask when you check in.

Alcohol Rehab Aftercare: Which Is Better For You?

Deciding which alcohol rehab aftercare option is best for you is a personal issue and a choice that you will make with your therapeutic team before you complete alcohol rehab. Depending upon your home situation, it is often easier to avoid triggering situations when you choose sober living. If you have supportive family members or roommates at home, then this may not be as much of an issue and checking in regularly will be enough to sustain you after you return home as long as you continue to build a support network outside of rehab.
