Alcoholism presents a unique set of challenges for women in terms of their health and well-being. And while fewer women than men become addicted to alcohol, the statistics are still high enough to constitute a problem that captures the attention of the addiction treatment community. Alcohol rehab centers for women help address the unique issues pertaining to women and their addiction -and give them a chance to overcome this potentially deadly condition.

Why do Women become Alcoholics?

While women share some of the same root causes for alcoholism as men, there are several contributing factors that are almost entirely exclusive to women, including:

  • Self-esteem and self-image issues. Women, especially those in their teens or early twenties, often suffer from significant self-esteem issues. The mainstream media bombards them with an unattainable, unrealistic picture of beauty. Depression and anxiety over the pursuit of this image leads many women to numb their pain with alcohol.
  • Co-dependent relationships. Many women develop alcohol addictions because their significant other has a drinking problem as well. These destructive co-dependent relationships have the woman trapped in a cycle of addiction because she fears that the relationship will fail if she does not take part in the behavior.
  • Sexual or physical abuse. While many men also fall victim to abuse, the event takes a particular toll on women. Remaining isolated or unable to speak about the incident, women often become depressed -which can lead to alcoholism or drug addiction.

What Happens During Alcohol Rehab for Women?

There are three major components in almost every alcohol rehab program that works with women: detox, counseling and aftercare.

  • Detox. The alcohol detox process helps women overcome their physical addiction to alcohol by allowing all the toxins that have entered their system a chance to leave the body. During this period, the individual may experience a series of withdrawal symptoms for a number of days, but once they have passed she is ready to move forward with the remainder of treatment.
  • Counseling. Individual and group counseling represent the core of any effective alcohol rehab program for women. These are the sessions where the recovering addict can unearth the reasons why she began drinking in the first place, and learn strategies to help change her behavior and make better decisions moving forward.
  • Aftercare. Women who complete alcohol rehab need continued support and guidance in their pursuit of sobriety. 12-step programs, additional counseling and sober living homes all provide a means of healthy transition from rehab into the flow of daily sober life.

The Importance of Alcohol Rehab for Women

Women benefit greatly from those programs that understand their specific needs. And while programs cater exclusively to women, the best rehab facilities create an environment that is both a safe and productive place for them to heal. Many times, this comes in the form of gender-specific group counseling sessions within the core addiction treatment program. These types of sessions allow women to share experiences and speak openly without fear of judgment from those who may not understand their condition.

In addition, alcohol rehab for women addresses issues of child-care and personal relationships -and how they are impacted by addiction. The single-mother who is also a recovering addict may face a number of challenges and fears (over potentially losing their family) that a man in the same position may not experience.
