Myths and Facts About Alcohol Rehab

Myth: Alcohol rehab is very expensive

Fact: While some luxury rehab programs cost thousands of dollars per week, there are just as many which are affordable to the majority of the general public. In addition, many insurance plans cover alcohol rehab. (Note: check with insurance provider to confirm before enrolling in any program.)

Myth: Alcohol rehab can be completed in a few days

Fact: Beware claims of "instant rehab" from any addiction treatment facility. Most programs last 30 days or longer, and long-term alcohol rehab can last upwards of an entire year. Alcohol rehab is a deliberate process that focuses on getting people clean and sober…and teaching them the skills they need to stay that way. This is not a process that can be achieved overnight, but rather one that requires dedication and commitment on the part of the individual. Once a recovering alcoholic makes that level of commitment, the alcohol rehab program can help make some serious changes in their life.

Myth: Alcohol detox is the same thing as alcohol rehab

Fact: Alcohol detox helps address the physical component of addiction by giving the body time to free itself of the harmful toxins associated with beer, wine and hard liquor. Alcohol rehab, however, is composed of both physical and psychological components. Once detox is complete, the individual must then take part in counseling to help change the behaviors associated with alcohol abuse. Detox is simply an important part of rehab.

Myth: Residential alcohol rehab is more effective than outpatient alcohol rehab

Fact: While there are advantages to residential care (including round-the-clock attention and having a safe place to focus solely on recovery) the programs are very similar to outpatient care – where the individual can return home at the end of every treatment day. Both types of alcohol rehab are outstanding ways to break the cycle of addiction, but to call one more effective than other would be an untrue statement.

Myth: When an individual completes alcohol rehab, there is nothing left to do

Fact: When alcohol rehab is complete, many challenges are just beginning. An individual must readjust themselves to life outside of rehab. They must make better decisions and avoid temptations that can lead to relapse. Luckily, aftercare programs are there to help. Aftercare programs include 12-step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and follow up counseling designed to provide support, accountability and strength as the individual begins a new, drug-free life.

Myth: All alcohol rehab facilities can help dual diagnosis patients

Fact: Dual diagnosis – the condition in which the individual suffers from both a mental illness and a co-occurring addiction – requires a specialized form of treatment that is not available at all rehab facilities.
