Women are less likely than men to get the alcohol treatment they need. Their responsibilities with family, difficulty coming up with the money to pay for treatment, and the stigma associated with alcoholism often keep them from even attempting to get the help.

At Michael’s House, we can answer your questions about how you can get the alcohol detox and treatment you need. If you or your loved one is an alcoholic, please don’t wait.

Alcohol Treatment for Women: Is Rehab a Priority

Unfortunately, for many women, alcohol addiction treatment is not the top priority for a number of reasons.

If there are dependent children, a codependent spouse or dependent relatives in the picture, the woman addicted to alcohol may not feel she has the option to leave for any length of time. The truth is that everyone who depends on her will only benefit in the long run if she gets the medical help she needs and that, until her alcoholism is addressed, the safety of everyone around her may be in jeopardy.

Paying for Rehab

The cost of alcohol treatment through detox and rehab can be prohibitive for women. Especially those who stay at home or work from home may not have the option of insurance.

You may need to borrow the money and/or look for local programs that will help you cover the cost of treatment. You may be able to get help through your spouse’s insurance or, if you are young enough, through your parents’ insurance. Don’t be afraid to research your options. Your alcohol rehab of choice may be able to offer you a payment plan as well. Ask to find out what’s available to you.

Telling Friends and Family

Many women are masters at covering up their alcoholism. Often, their friends and families may not know the extent of their problem with alcohol. Even if they suspect, it may not be addressed, and so many women who struggle with alcoholism and drug addiction are embarrassed about their need for treatment. They may attempt to stop drinking alone, without success, multiple times before they finally admit that they need medical help through rehab. The prospect of telling friends and family may be humiliating and, in some cases, enough of a barrier to stop them from going.
It may be unavoidable to some extent: people you live with and those who depend on you to care for them will not only need to know that you are leaving and that they won’t be able to contact you at least for the first couple weeks, but you may also need to make other arrangements for them while you are gone. Everyone else, it can be on a need-to-know basis until you return and even then, only if you feel ready. Anonymity and privacy are extremely important at all rehab centers, so you can limit the list of people who know about your personal business.
