3 Celebrities Who Came Back from Drug and Alcohol Addiction

November 28, 2011

Though it is more common for the media to be saturated with stories of celebrities who have succumbed to drug and alcohol addiction, there are also a fair number of stories of celebrities who managed to hit rock bottom, go through the process of healing, and come back to lead healthy and happy lives without drugs and alcohol. Here are just a few:

Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. is an actor who first made his mark in Hollywood with a number of popular teen films. Despite continuing to garner roles, his behavior off screen brought more attention than his work for a period of time. As the arrests and trips to drug rehab piled up, people began to write off Downey as a has-been and a washed out addict. He certainly proved the naysayers wrong. After years of fighting hard against his addiction issues, he has successfully built a new life for himself in recovery. His many successful roles on the screen and the continued offers for more work speak to how grounded he is now. Starring roles in films like Ironman, Ironman II, Sherlock Holmes and other films will keep coming his way as long as he sticks with it.

Robin Williams

A successful standup comedian, TV actor, and movie star, few comedians reach the heights of Robin Williams – and few have reached the lows that came to the star in the form of cocaine addiction. Though the first part of his career was defined by cocaine addiction, the death of friend and fellow comedian John Belushi helped Williams to realize that drug and alcohol dependence often comes with disastrous results. He soon checked into a cocaine rehab, focused on his health and his recovery, and is now famous for a number of highly versatile acting roles – one of which won him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore: the child star who first touched the hearts of viewers as Gertie in ET back in the 80s quickly shocked them when, just a few years after making the classic film, ended up developing an alcohol and drug addiction at the age of 13. It took years of rehabilitation and treatment for her to beat her addiction, but Barrymore is now living a balanced life without alcohol and drug dependency, working steadily as a movie actress in a variety of different roles.
