Amy Winehouse Helped Others Fight Drug Addiction, Couldn’t Help Herself
Amy Winehouse was recently found dead in her London home, saddening fans around the world. The assumed cause of death is drug overdose despite the fact that autopsy results were inconclusive, and people are in mourning over the loss of the artist herself as well as the long line of artists who have also died at age 27 due to drugs and alcohol.
One friend came forward to bring a positive note to the discussion about Winehouse’s life. Alex Foden says that when he was struggling with drug addiction, Winehouse, a friend, paid more than £130,000 so that he could get the drug rehab help he needed. Foden says that it was Winehouse who saved his life with her care and investment in his recovery – even though she was the one who got him into abusing drugs and alcohol heavily in the first place.
Foden also says that Winehouse felt that she would die young and become a part of the infamous “27 Club,” a term that refers to the many young artists and musicians who have died early deaths at the age of 27.
Said Foden: “Amy always told me she thought she would die young and that she knew she’d become a part of the 27 Club.
“Although everyone around her knew it was going to happen, it was still a shock. I’ve been crying pretty much ever since I heard.”
It’s not uncommon for those living with drug and alcohol addiction to be far more adept at helping others fix their problems than at fixing their own. While it’s easy enough to advise someone else to do the hard work and get clean and sober, it’s something else entirely to have to do it yourself. Though her friend tried to encourage her to get clean and sober, she simply wasn’t ready.
If someone you care about is living with an active drug addiction, you can help him or her to get the drug rehab help needed to move forward in life. It may take time and you may need to take your distance if you are currently clean and sober but remind your friend regularly that treatment is available and the only way to truly fight drug addiction – and win.
