CA Governor Approves Ban on Caffeinated Beer
You knew it was coming. With all the new warnings against high-caffeine beverages mixed with alcohol and the increased regulations controlling the purchase and use of alcohol-infused dessert products, it wasn’t long before caffeinated beer took a hit.
What’s Wrong with Caffeinated Alcoholic Drinks?
Recently, caffeinated alcohol beverages caused a stir in the court room when officials took specific companies and the high alcohol content of their drinks to task. They said that some of these companies were marketing their drinks to those who were under the legal drinking age or promoting excess in young drinkers.
They also said that there were inherent risks to combining alcohol and caffeine. Caffeine masks the effects of alcohol, causing drinkers to drink more and more of the beverages without realizing just how much alcohol they’ve consumed. When the caffeine wears off, they are left with the full brunt of their overindulgence in alcohol and are often too inebriated to take care of themselves. Many black out or end up in dangerous situations as a result.
When mixed with other illicit substances, including marijuana, cocaine, heroin, prescription drugs and others, the effects of caffeinated beer can worsen. Many drinkers ultimately overdose simply because they cannot gauge how much they have ingested and continue to drink and take other drugs without restraint.
No More Caffeinated Alcoholic Beverages in CA
Governor Jerry Brown of California has passed a bill that bans the production and sale of caffeinated beer anywhere in the state – and he’s not the first to do so. California is actually the seventh state to implement such regulations. Washington, New York, Utah, Kansas, Michigan and Massachusetts were first to take these beverages off the shelves.
The response by manufacturers was first denial of any charges of marketing to youth or encouraging overindulgence, but store owners started removing the beverages from their shelves before the bills passed to avoid liability. As a result, many manufacturers have gotten onboard with the movement and changed their formulas to exclude caffeine.
