Fergie Bares All about Past Drug Addiction
Fergie, the glamorous singer from the Black Eyed Peas, has recently opened up to Glamour Magazine. Her struggle with meth addiction is one of the topics covered in the December edition of the magazine. It’s not the first time she’s discussed her addiction history in public. In 2006, she talked about how difficult it was to “break up” with meth back in the early 2000′s. After several years, she admits to a controversial practice regarding her sobriety. Read on to learn more and make your own opinion.
Fergie Doesn’t Claim To Be Sober
The Glamour article previews indicate that Fergie doesn’t exactly stay sober these days. She reports that her father owns a vineyard and she still has wine from time to time. She knows this is not the usual practice of people in addiction recovery, but she claims that she is on her own journey.
This is, of course, highly controversial. Nearly all mainstream addiction treatment philosophies maintain that a person in addiction recovery must remain completely sober for the rest of their life to stay on track. There are many sound reasons for this.
Many addicts and alcoholics have done damage to their body. Further drug or alcohol use can trigger old problems or add more health risks. Also, use of any type of addictive substance, even if it wasn’t the person’s drug of choice, could trigger the addiction mindset and lead to relapse.
Is Fergie Setting Dangerous Example?
So is Fergie setting a dangerous example by still drinking after she got her meth addiction under control? It’s hard to say. It’s certainly not something most treatment professionals would recommend. Yes, there are going to be a few individuals who can live with this kind of exception. However, that is not likely to be the case for the majority of people in recovery.
It’s definitely a gamble and time will certainly tell. Will she stay on top of her sobriety, or will she follow Lindsay Lohan’s sad path of relapse and legal problems? We may need to hear more about how her performance life, her marriage, and this exception all work together.
Celebrity Life And Addiction Recovery
Bumps happen in life and a celebrity has to work extra hard to manage everything. There have already been rumors about her husband having some sort of affair, though she’s denied the truth of that. They both live a very public life, which adds to the scrutiny and attention given to usually private situations.
If her choice to drink provides a loophole for her recovery plan, she may be setting herself up for a problem down the road. It’s a built-in exception and it could lead to more exceptions and excuses. She may pull this off, but you can see how the risk for relapse is ever-present.
For good or for bad, we’ll likely hear how this turns out. Drinking during an addiction recovery is not the recommended path for anyone reading this article. But do make note of Fergie’s choices here and look for headlines in the future.
