Fergie Talks About Her Crystal Meth Addiction Struggle

August 24, 2011

Fergie, singer for the Black Eyed Peas, recently discussed her addiction to crystal meth and talked about the highs and lows of addiction as well as her struggle to kick the habit.

Crystal Meth Addiction Ups and Downs

When looking back on her time spent living with an active addiction to crystal, Fergie recalls good times as well as bad. Obviously, being a slave to a drug that causes health problems, destroys your appearance, and wreaks havoc with your mood isn’t going to bring with it a lot of positive things. But when asked about her experience with and thoughts on crystal meth addiction, Fergie said: “I think that sometimes it leads to brilliance and other times it leads to disaster.”

Brilliance and disaster? The stimulant effect of crystal meth can make users feel like they have more energy, more focus on creative endeavors, and more creative spark. Unfortunately, the backlash can reveal those initial artistic epiphanies to be somewhat lacking in depth or interest and the self-doubt and ill health and “torn down” appearance of those who use the drug regularly can kill any of the positive characteristics of the drug – especially when you’re a performer. The disaster comes in being unable to control your own life, perform consistently for your fans, and deal with the stresses of fame and day-to-day life without completely melting down.

Peers and Crystal Meth Addiction

Fergie wasn’t the only one in her band to struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. Taboo, another band member, also had problems living with drug abuse and said that life in the band often made it more difficult to have a “normal” relationship with illicit substances.

Says Taboo: “The excess of partying for me was out of control and it just let me to a place where I crashed really hard. It wasn’t just about me, I was damaging my family and almost my career.

“The thing is, when you do have that addictive personality and you have success and fame, it’s there every night. And you partake. And you get caught up, ‘Oh, I’ll stop tomorrow.’ I’d look at myself in the mirror and say, ‘I’m going to stop,’ and next day go to the drug dealer. But I bounced back.”
