Holidays a difficult time for those with a drug addiction

Having a drug addiction makes every day an emotional and physical challenge. But during the holidays, these challenges become much tougher, as people must deal with their families, holiday-related stress and feelings of loss and regret.

In addition, seasonal depression syndrome and temptation found among old peers can lead to heavier levels of substance abuse during the holiday season.

It all adds up to higher rates of drug overdoses during the holidays and stress for families of all socio-economic groups. In fact, accidental drug overdose is second only to drunk driving as the leading cause of death during the winter holiday months.

To help curtail the holiday drug addiction problem, families are urged to use the time to come together and support their loved ones who may have a substance abuse problem. People should use the time together as a chance to tell the individual how much they love them, and perhaps even arrange for an intervention at the outset of 2009.
