Lindsay Lohan to be Released from Drug Rehab

January 8, 2011

It’s certainly not her first time in drug rehab, nor is it Lindsay Lohan’s first exodus from treatment. With flashes popping and paparazzi screaming her name, Lohan is slated to leave drug addiction treatment -again. She has another court date in February and the judge has made it clear: if she fails the drug test again, she won’t be given the gift of another stay in drug rehab but instead will be shipped back to jail.

Lindsay’s response thus far? Just a tweet on New Year’s Day: “Today is the first day of the rest of my life.”

Once, Twice: How Many Times Do You Have to Go to Drug Rehab to Recover?

Still on probation for a 2007 drunk driving conviction, Lohan has been making the news every few months with dirty drug tests, fights with ex-girlfriends and tearful court dates. Her trips to rehab make the good tabloid fodder, but the truth is that the average person struggling with drug and alcohol addiction will attend rehab more than once if they go at all.

Though there are some who will get everything they need from their first stay in rehab and remain clean and sober for the rest of their lives as a result, many will need to return if they relapse. The goal of treatment is to provide you with the skills you need to avoid relapse and, failing that, the skills you need to make any relapse a short one. Too many slip -and that slip turns into a months-long binge on their drug of choice. In order to regain their balance without drugs and alcohol, they return to drug addiction treatment in order to “brush up” on what they learned. It’s normal, and it’s a positive thing when you take the opportunity to grow in your recovery.

Drug Rehab as a Crutch?

Some protest that those who return to drug rehab repeatedly are using the facility as a crutch rather than a jumping off place for a life without addiction. The guidance and support found at inpatient drug rehab centers are structures put in place to help you through the hard parts as you begin your recovery, but some come to depend on the safety inherent to a rehab center and find it difficult to stay clean and sober without the protection that comes from a drug-free environment and supportive staff.

If you find that you or someone you love is heading back to inpatient treatment again and again, there are other options. Many inpatient drug rehabs offer alumni meetings and support groups for their graduates so that those who leave don’t feel adrift in the world. Other aftercare options out in the community continue to provide guidance and support (i.e., 12 step meetings, group therapy, personal therapy, et cetera) but still allow you to work and go to school -to lead your life and move forward rather than stagnating in the treatment portion of recovery.
