Matthew Perry Heads Back to Rehab to Focus on Sobriety
Matthew Perry, star of Friends and Mr. Sunshine, has decided to take a breather and head back to drug rehab for a period of time. Perry famously struggled with addiction in the mid- to late-90s and sought addiction treatment in 1997 and again in 2001. His latest trip to rehab is not due to relapse or the recurrence of his prescription drug addiction but to “focus on staying sober.” In other words, it’s more of a preventative measure than a curative one.
Perry said in a recent statement to TMZ: “I’m making plans to go away for a month to focus on my sobriety and to continue my life in recovery. Please enjoy making fun of me on the world wide web.”
When is it Time to Go to Drug Rehab?
A recent trend among celebrities to head to drug rehab without a relapse or active drug addiction issue has raised a question among those in recovery. It used to be that drug addiction treatment programs were thought to be appropriate only when an active addiction required acute medical and psychological care. Now it is just as common to see those who have already successfully completed drug rehab make the voluntary choice to head back to treatment when they feel the pressures or stresses of life building to a point that they recognize as dangerous for their addiction issues. It’s an extremely self-aware and proactive choice, one that should be commended – and recommended.
The fact is that it’s time to go to rehab whenever you feel like you would benefit from drug addiction treatment. Obviously, anyone living with an active addiction characterized by withdrawal symptoms should seek medical detox and psychological addiction treatment. Those who are emotionally or mentally dependent upon alcohol and other drugs would do well to enroll in an outpatient or inpatient rehab program. For those who have successfully completed drug rehab but feel that their sobriety is in danger due to external events or internal emotions, a sober living program or an inpatient treatment that offers a little distance from the issue may be the very thing necessary to avoid relapse – and all the risks that come with it.
