Newlywed Groom Charged in NY Pharmacy Shooting

July 18, 2011

Even when the most amazing things are happening in life –a new marriage, a new baby, a job promotion – drug addiction doesn’t care. When an active drug addiction is an issue, it’s almost impossible to avoid making really terrible, potentially life changing decisions. David Laffer, a regular guy with a job in the shipping department and a new wife, learned that lesson the hard way. His drug addiction allegedly compelled him to rob a pharmacy and, ultimately, leave four dead in his wake.

Charged with first degree murder and resisting arrest, Laffer has no prior criminal record. But some news services say that prescription drug addiction became a problem and that, when Laffer lost his job, he may have felt forced to resort to crime.

Prescription Drug Addiction: How it Starts

The story of Laffer and his ultimate alleged crimes just a couple short years after his marriage to his new wife shows just how quickly an addiction can change your life. In just a few months, a physical and/ or psychological dependence to a prescription for painkillers like OxyContin, Percocet, hydrocodone and others can develop. When both occur together – psychological and physical dependence – a prescription drug addiction is in full force. Over time, it becomes the sole focus of your life and there are no good things that can eclipse it, no matter how great. Everything falls to the wayside as you pursue more and more pills to maintain your addiction and, in the end, you can lose everything – even your freedom.

There is no excuse for what this guy did, it’s horrible, I understand being addicted because I went through it but a normal addict would never go this far. If you notice they didn’t steal money , the problem with opiate abuse is that when you run out you get very sick. And people that aren’t addicts would say they should have went buy some but the problem is the DEA has cracked down so much on doctors that a lot of the time people are unable to find the drug on the street, unlike marijuana and cocaine, because pill heads buy from people who go to the doctor. Pill heads will be pill heads if they are legal or not, and making it impossible for the addict to score leaves them throwing up, in convulsions sometimes , not sleeping. The government should make it to where if someone is a pill head they can go to the pharmacy and legally buy a days supply, this would stop at least the burglaries because the street price would be so low it wouldn’t be worth breaking in for the ones who do it for money and the ones who rob for a fix would be able to just buy there medicine. This guy had NO excuse killing people, but this is a free country and as long as someone isn’t out in public driving or causing a scene they should be able to buy what they want even if it does consume there life. I can say from first hand experience that the only reason pills ever caused me trouble was when I could not find any and that the street price for like roxicodone is 30 times the purchase price, so it makes addicts go broke just because of that fact. Most pill heads take it to feel like normal people feel daily because after your tolerance is built up you don’t get high like you do with other drugs. I guarantee if they would do like with pseudophedrine and use your drivers license to see how much you buy and allow a person to buy daily to prevent them from being sick and in pain then the criminal element would be reduced by at least 80%. you might say I’m a pill head looking to make drugs legal but I have been clean 2 years. The government makes money putting people in jail and it employees cops to put people with non violent crimes in jail with murders and rapists for being addicted to pills, it’s time the Regan era way of thinking changes with the times, apply the same laws as you do with alcohol , and it would get much better, alcohol makes people act alot worse than lortabs or oxycodone does, legalize it and stop the violence. Just like the borders people killing to transport drugs for profit. If marijuana was legal the cartels wouldn’t be able to profit from sneaking the stuff in at borders be it cocaine or marijuana if it was made at pharmaceutical companies people even heroin addicts would know what they are buying, most overdoses ( not all) occur because you don’t know what your buying with coke or heroin, look at Portugal if you think I’m wrong, they legalized ALL drugs several years ago and the crime has dropped severaly also spread of HIV
