Obstacles to drug addiction treatment
Over 24 million people suffer from alcohol or drug addiction in the United States, yet it is believed that only about 7% of these men and women receive the addiction treatment they need from a professional facility. Why? Certainly nobody chooses to see their life spiral out of control as a result of drug addiction. The following is a list of some of the most common reasons why individuals do not seek, or receive the addiction treatment help they need.
Common Obstacles to Drug Addiction Treatment
1) Admitting the problem. A large percentage of drug addicts are unable or unwilling to admit that they have a problem at all. That means, without the support of family and friends who are willing to hold an intervention, the individual is likely to fall deeper and deeper into the downward spiral of addiction.
2) Cost. With drug rehab costs on the rise, many people simply cannot afford treatment. Luckily, more and more insurance companies are covering the cost of drug rehab, and programs are beginning to offer generous financing options for those who need help – but have seen their finances fall into disarray as a result of drug addiction.
3) Attitude during treatment. Some people enter into a drug treatment program, only to undermine themselves by maintaining a poor attitude throughout the course of the program. By fighting back against the same people who are trying to help, the individual is impeding their own recovery progress.
4) Shame. Although we have come a long way in terms of how we view drug addiction in this country, to many, there is still a stigma attached. The shame of being “branded” as an addict keeps a number of people away from the life-saving help they need.
5) Relapse. Finally, relapse is one of the most common causes of failure to achieve recovery. Chronic relapsers will either not be stable enough to get themselves into treatment, or will revert back to old habits once the program is complete.
