Prescription Drug Rehab: Are You Addicted to Your Medication?

August 12, 2011

You went to the doctor with a chronic pain issue: your back, the recurrence of an old injury, an acute injury caused by an accident or surgery. The prescription you got worked in the beginning, but then you needed a higher dosage in order to get relief from the pain. Or maybe it worked in the beginning but then the injury healed and the pain went away on its own and you started to enjoy the “high” you got from the pills, so you kept taking them.

Perhaps you are diagnosed with an anxiety disorder or panic disorder. You may have gotten a prescription for a sedative to take when you feel an attack coming on – but ended up taking more than prescribed or taking them without the signs of a panic attack.

No matter how you came to where you are today, you may have an inkling that your relationship with your prescription is different than when you began. How do you know when that relationships has turned into an addiction?  And what do you do if you suspect that you can’t quit on your own?

Identifying a Prescription Drug Addiction

There are a few signs that can let you know when a prescription has begun to take over your life. If you recognize any of the following issues in your life, then prescription drug addiction may be a problem for you that requires treatment:

  • Often asking for emergency refills when you take too many.
  • Getting multiple prescriptions for the same drug from different doctors.
  • Augmenting a prescription with other drugs, including alcohol.
  • Buying more pills rather than paying rent, bills, groceries, et cetera.
  • Choosing to be in a place where you can comfortably be high rather than at an event or doing an activity that requires concentration, focus, and interaction.

What to do if Prescription Drug Addiction is a Problem for You

The only way to deal with a prescription drug addiction is to attend a prescription drug rehab. When physical and psychological dependence is a problem, it will be difficult to impossible to cut back on your dosage until you are drug-free without 24-hour medical care and psychotherapeutic guidance.
