Drug Abuse Statistics: Marijuana Abuse and Addiction

Reported marijuana abuse over the last month decreased slightly across the board and the perceived risk of smoking marijuana has increased slightly. Still, about 7 percent of those under the age of 18 admitted to having smoked marijuana in the last month and almost 17 percent of young adults said that they smoked marijuana regularly.

Drug Abuse Statistics: Alcohol Abuse and Addiction

Rates of alcohol abuse and addiction have pretty much stayed the same over the years. About 50 percent of those over the age of 12 say that imbibed to excess in the last month. About 60 percent of adults over the age of 26 said the same thing. Just over 19 percent of those under the legal drinking age of 21 claimed that they drank to excess in the month previous and the perception that binge drinking is dangerous has decreased in many states.

Drug Abuse Statistics: Cocaine Abuse and Addiction

Cocaine abuse showed a tiny decline for annual use, with the exception of a slight increase in a few states in those between the ages of 18 and 25. The perception of cocaine as a dangerous binge drug has increased as well as education improves. However, few acknowledge the danger of mixing cocaine and alcohol and the deadly health problems that result.

Drug Abuse Statistics: Prescription Drug Abuse and Addiction

Across the country, prescription drug abuse is up across all age groups. Due to ease of access, youth under the age of 17 report that prescription drugs are the drugs of choice, but the prevalence of prescriptions for drugs like Vicodin, oxycodone, codeine, Percocet and Percotab, Lorcet and Lortab, means that a larger percentage of Americans are at risk for prescription drug addiction at higher rates than ever before. For those with chronic issues with back pain or pain due to cancer treatment, prescription drug addiction is an even higher risk.
