Trends
Different drugs become more popular, others fall off, but one thing remains the same: the number of people using drugs addictively rises each year and the age of people trying drugs for the first time seems to get younger and younger for more and more dangerous drugs.
One of the most alarming drug addiction trends is that a huge percentage of those with active addictions are not getting the treatment they need. Instead, they continue to live from year to year with an addiction that is slow suicide.
If you or someone you love is living with cocaine addiction, prescription drug addiction, alcoholism, marijuana addiction, heroin addiction or co-occurring disorders of addiction and psychological issues, Michael’s House can help.

Age of Use Trends
There was a significant change in the numbers of survey respondents reporting drug use between 1979 and 1980. For example, in 1979, more than 30 percent of teens between the ages of 12 and 17 reported using drugs at least once in their lives but in 1980, that number dropped to 27 percent. It showed a steady decline until 1993 when the number was just 16 percent -but every year since, the number of teens reporting drug usage has steadily increased each year.
Emergency Room Visits
The drug most often cited as an instigating factor in an accident that led to an emergency room visit is cocaine. Marijuana and heroin often alternate in the second and third place positions and crystal meth or speed is distant fourth.
Drug Abuse and Prison Population
Many assume that criminals are also drug addicts. While it is true that a large percentage of drug addicts are driven to crime to support their habit or are often in court because possession of many addictive substances is illegal, the statistics show that fewer and fewer state prison inmates are living with an active drug addiction: the number was at about 56 percent in the 1980s but now it hovers between 30 percent and 40 percent.
