myths about detoxing from drugsConvincing yourself, a friend or a family member to go to detox could be one of the hardest things you’ll ever do. Denial is a powerful side effect of drug addiction, and many addicts never manage to overcome it. The drug detox myths that circulate in our culture don’t make it any easier to take this leap. If you’ve been struggling to make a commitment to recovery, consider some of the common misconceptions that may be holding you back.

Myth #1. You don’t need professional treatment — you can detox just as effectively on your own.

For many addicts, this myth is just another manifestation of denial. The idea of self-detox sounds so much easier than committing to a rehab program. In fact, professional drug detox programs give you the resources you need to avoid the severe discomfort of withdrawal. According to Addiction Science & Clinical Practice, withdrawal is one of the biggest obstacles to recovery for the majority of addicts. At a professional detox program, you’ll have access to medical monitoring, pharmaceutical support and counseling services to help you get through this tough period.

Myth #2. Detox requires a long-term separation from your normal life.

Going to a detox program doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be cut off from your job, family and friends for months. Outpatient detox programs offer many of the same services as residential rehab, and you can continue to live at home. Outpatient programs aren’t the right solution for everyone, but if you’re highly motivated and you don’t have serious health conditions that require 24-hour monitoring, you can take advantage of this flexible alternative.

Myth #3. If you go to detox, everyone you know will find out about it.

Substance abuse treatment is considered a medical service, which means that your privacy is protected under a federal law called the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA. Except under very specific circumstances, a detox facility cannot share information about your past, present or future treatment. Facilities or individuals that violate the terms of HIPAA face steep fines and legal action.

Myth #4. Only wealthy people can afford good detox programs.

Effective drug detox programs aren’t reserved for the rich and famous. No matter where you live, you can probably find at least one effective professional drug detox program that meets your needs. Many substance abuse treatment programs are covered or partially covered by medical insurance. Some of the best detox facilities in the country also offer sliding scale payment plans for patients with limited financial resources.

Myth #5. After detox, you’ll have to rely on your willpower to stay clean.

Drug addiction is now recognized as a chronic, relapsing disease that can’t be controlled with willpower alone. Today, drug detox professionals agree that once the addictive substances have been flushed from your system, you’ll need a lot of support to stay drug-free. In reality, detox is only the beginning of a long journey to recovery. As part of your recovery plan, you’ll need intensive counseling, access to a peer support network and a full range of aftercare services. Many recovering addicts use medication to control their cravings and maintain their sobriety.

At Michael’s House we provide a full range of holistic rehab services, from drug detoxification to aftercare. Our admissions counselors are available at any time to answer your questions and help you find the best option for your situation.
