Alternative Drug Treatment Programs
The majority of drug rehab programs use three basic elements to help their patients break the cycle of addiction: detox, counseling and aftercare.
There are, however, some drug rehab programs that utilize a variety of different techniques to help people achieve wellness and live drug-free lives. While these alternative drug rehab programs are geared towards all addicts, they do offer a window into some of the more progressive treatment styles currently being offered around the country. Also, many of these drug rehab programs speak to a particular niche, focus their treatment on certain groups such as women or members of the GLBT community.
Holistic Drug Rehab
Many drug rehab facilities have now devoted at least some of their program to holistic care. Holistic drug rehab uses ancient Eastern practices to help the recovering addict find balance, achieve a higher plane of enlightenment and just generally enjoy more peace of mind.
The most common holistic drug rehab practices include yoga, transcendental meditation, acupuncture and other Chinese methods of connecting the mind, body and spirit.
While a few drug rehab programs will work entirely in holistic terms, the majority of facilities simply incorporate aspects of holistic care into more traditional treatment methods such as detox, individual counseling, group counseling and aftercare.
Faith-Based Drug Rehab
Spiritual individuals may not be comfortable with some of the means used during traditional drug rehab. For them, there are faith-based drug rehabs that tap into the teachings of the Bible and a belief in a higher power in order to help the individual achieve recovery. Many of the lessons found in faith-based drug rehab are already being utilized by the millions of people who take part in 12-step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.
GLBT Drug Rehab
Several facilities around the United States are now offering drug rehabilitation services exclusively for members of the GLBT community. These progressive facilities offer specialized counseling that deals with the root causes of drug addiction among gay and lesbian individuals, including: family problems, isolation, confusion over sexual identity, peer group pressure and other concerns.
Women’s Drug Rehab
A growing trend in the addiction treatment community, drug rehab for women offers a way for women to heal in a safe, non-threatening environment. These facilities focus on the forms of addiction treatment that have been found to help women more effective break the cycle of drug dependence. This women-only facility place a greater emphasis, for example, on group counseling which has been found to be more effective in a single-sex setting.
