Drug Rehab Aftercare

What is Drug Rehab Aftercare?

Once an individual completes drug rehab, their journey towards sober living is not complete. It is essential that the recovering drug addict take part in a drug rehab aftercare program. A drug rehab aftercare program helps the individual stay clean and eases their transition into a drug-free world. There are many different types of drug rehab aftercare programs – and it is essential that the individual finds the one that works best for him or her.

The Different Types of Drug Rehab Aftercare

First there is the most common type of aftercare program – meetings on a daily or weekly basis. In this instance, the individual who has graduated from the drug rehab program returns to meet with the same professionals after they have left the facility. These aftercare programs may consist of individual sessions, group sessions or both. The idea behind them is the same however, to provide the recovering addict with a support structure and an executable task that they must achieve regularly. Tasks such as this help build back the self-responsibility that the individual may have lost during his or her drug addiction.

Narcotics Anonymous is considered to be an aftercare program in that it requires the individual to attend regular meetings and gives them a chance to interact with others who are going through a similar situation. NA is not for everyone, but for many it serves as a kind of continuing after care program that goes on after the supervision of medical professionals has ceased.

Another form of drug rehab aftercare is the work exchange program. In this type of aftercare, the individual stays in the drug rehab facility after they have completed their program. During this time, the individual pitches in with work around the facility while interacting and offering support to new patients. This is a solution for those individuals who have completed their program but are not yet ready to reenter the world outside its walls.

Sober living houses are another form of aftercare program for those in need of a gentler transition back into the world they left when they were a drug addict. This quasi-aftercare program helps those who enjoy a group setting and make progress when receiving the support of their peers.

Why Drug Rehab Aftercare is Important

Whichever type of aftercare program the individual selects, he must understand that drug rehab aftercare only works if you abide by the rules and attend on a regular basis. To miss meetings is to defeat the entire purpose of the aftercare program. In addition to providing support for the struggle against relapse, attending regular meeting give the individual a completed task that they can hang their hat on.

Aftercare programs work! That is why they have become almost universally required (in one form or another) for anyone who completes their drug rehab program.
