Treatment 101: All About the Basics
For individuals are their families who have seen their lives negatively impacted by addiction, a drug treatment program is the best chance at regaining control and seeing a brighter future on the horizon. It is important to understand the basic concepts of drug treatment in order to receive the most appropriate and effective treatment available.
What are the Basic Types of Drug Treatment?
There are two primary formats of drug treatment (from which all other specific rehab program types flow): residential and outpatient. While both these program types offer many of the same core treatment options, there is a primary difference in the manner in which they are delivered.
- Residential drug treatment -has the individual moving into a rehab center full-time. This shift away from their home environment gives them an opportunity to focus solely on recovery without the temptations or distraction of daily life.
- Outpatient drug treatment -is designed for individuals with a less-serious drug problem, or those who are unable to put their lives on hold in order to pursue treatment full-time. Outpatient rehab has the individual attending the program during the day, and then returning home or to a sober living home in the evening.
Detox and Drug Treatment
The first step in almost every reputable drug treatment program is detox. Drug detox is a chance for the individual to overcome their physical addiction to drugs by cleansing their system of the harmful toxins found in these substances. During drug detox, the individual may experience a number of withdrawal symptoms, including:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Strong drug cravings
- Irritability and mood swings
- Sleeplessness
The withdrawal symptoms can last anywhere from three days to two weeks -and although they are not life-threatening per se, they can easily cause the individual to relapse. For that reason, detox professionals are always standing by to help the individual stay healthy and maintain focus during this challenging time.
Counseling and Drug Treatment
At the heart of every great drug treatment program is counseling. Drug addiction counseling is a chance to address the psychological elements of addiction and learn life-strategies needed to maintain sobriety in the months and years following the completion of the program.
The three primary types of drug treatment counseling are: individual, group and family. Individual counseling is a chance to work privately with a therapist to learn one’s triggers for drug use and learn how to respond to these stressors in a healthier, more productive manner. Group counseling has the individuals in the program speaking openly and honestly with one another about their issues. This creates a support structure that greatly enhances the recovery process. Family counseling is a chance for parents, children and siblings to improve the lines of communication and rebuild trust with one another.
