Drug Treatment and Relapse
One of the ways in which researchers ascertain the effectiveness of a given drug addiction treatment is by tracking how many drop out of the drug treatment early due to relapse or relapse after they return home. The length of time they spend actively in relapse—that is, using drugs and/ or alcohol—is also measured as well as how many return to drug treatment as a way back to a clean and sober life.
At Michael’s House, we recognize that relapse is a real possibility even with the best of intentions and a true desire to build a life without drug addiction. Our goal through drug rehab is to provide you with the relapse prevention tools you need to recognize the signs of relapse before it happens and fight your way out of it should it catch you unawares. The best way to fight relapse is to choose a drug treatment center with a heavy focus on relapse prevention.
Drug Treatment and Relapse Prevention
Relapse prevention is a big part of any effective drug treatment program. There are a few different goals of a relapse prevention program. They include:
- Helping you identify a relapse before it occurs via the identification of ‘triggers’
- Providing you with coping skills to reduce your exposure to relapse triggers and handle them when they arise unavoidably
- Providing you with an understanding of the nature of relapse and recovery so that if a relapse occurs, you are prepared to return to sobriety quickly
Relapse prevention is especially important to incorporate into drug treatment if for no other reason than the rate of drug overdose due to relapse after drug treatment is extremely high. Tolerances to drugs and alcohol readjust during abstinence and when people relapse, they often overindulge with the result of a deadly overdose. The best way to prevent drug overdose after drug addiction treatment is through relapse prevention.
Fighting Relapse During Drug Treatment
During drug treatment, relapse prevention is about education. Through group therapy, one-on-one therapy sessions and a variety of introspective therapeutic options, you are encouraged to identify events, emotions, objects and people who spark in you the craving to indulge in your drug of choice. Once identified, you can develop a plan to avoid these triggers altogether as well as an action plan to implement when you come into contact with these triggers in order to avoid relapse.
Fighting Relapse After Drug Treatment
Unfortunately, relapse is not uncommon after drug treatment. Having a plan of action means not only being able to stop yourself before you pick up your drug of choice but also being able to stop quickly if you do, for example, take a drink or get high one time. One time does not mean that you have to return to drug addiction for good. With a strong drug relapse prevention program, you can learn to pull yourself out of it before it destroys your life.
