What is an Intervention?

When friends and family suspect that an individual has a substance abuse problem, it is imperative that they get involved and do everything possible to get that person help. Alcoholics and drug addicts rarely get help for themselves because their addictions have a deep hold on them – keeping them from seeing the depth and scope of their problems.

The different types of intervention

Once you’ve decided to hold an intervention – and have contacted an intervention professional to help you run the proceedings – you should be aware that there are several different types of interventions that you should know about:

Family intervention – when the close members of the individual’s immediate family speak openly and honestly about the drug or alcohol abuse and how it is adversely affecting the family unit.

Emergency intervention – this occurs when friends and family believe that the individual has become a danger to himself or others and an intervention must be performed immediately.

Teen intervention – when a teenager has been abusing drugs or alcohol, it requires a more delicate touch during the intervention. The rebellious nature of the age means any acts of perceived confrontation or aggression will be seen as an attack. This will set the process back considerably. Work with an intervention specialist who knows how to deal with teens successfully before moving forward.

Workplace intervention – many times we become close with our co-workers, so much so that they are often the first ones to see when an individual has a problem with drugs or alcohol. A workplace intervention must be performed by people who the individual trusts and feel a closeness to – and of course as with all interventions, there needs to be a professional present to guide the proceedings.

What you need to know about interventions

As mentioned above, before you rush in and begin an intervention, it is very important to first consult with an intervention professional who can tell you whether or not the person close to you is a good candidate for an intervention. Intervention is a serious procedure – and every addict is different – so contacting a professional is crucial in determining whether or not it is needed – and if it is, what the size and scope of the intervention should be.
