3 Types of Opiate Detox Treatment Services
Heroin addiction and prescription painkiller addiction are both deadly diseases that require medical care and treatment to overcome. Opiate detox provides the medical portion of treatment, addressing the initial physical withdrawal symptoms that occur when the patient stops taking his or her drug of choice. There are a few different options to consider when deciding upon which type of opiate detox is the best for you – long-term medicated outpatient opiate detox, short-term inpatient opiate detox with medication, and short-term inpatient opiate detox without medication.

Long-Term Medicated Outpatient Opiate Detox
There are two different medications approved by the FDA to treat opiate addiction: methadone and Suboxone. Both are heavily regulated by the FDA and allow for an outpatient medical detox that would be impossible otherwise due to the significant and severe nature of opiate withdrawal symptoms.
Methadone regulations require that you come into a methadone clinic and take your dose daily in the presence of a counselor or nurse. You will also be required to take drug tests to ensure that you are not abusing other drugs and attend a mandatory number of check-ins with your case manager.
Suboxone is prescribed by a physician, like any other medication. It is non-habit forming and more difficult to abuse than methadone so patients are allowed to take the medication at home without supervision.
Depending upon the dose of your drug of choice when you begin detox, methadone or Suboxone may be more appropriate. Discuss the details with your doctor and make sure that you follow up with psychological addiction treatment in order to increase your chances of avoiding relapse.
Short-Term Inpatient Opiate Detox with Medication
Inpatient opiate detox is usually recommended to ensure that you don’t relapse during the early stages of recovery before you have a chance to really get started. Because you won’t be prolonging the physical addiction by using opiate detox medications, you will more quickly finish detox and become drug-free – often in a couple weeks. Medication, in this option, will be available to help ease your withdrawal symptoms and make you more comfortable as you process your drug of choice out of your system.
Short-Term Inpatient Opiate Detox Without Medication
Many believe that to put toxic chemicals of any kind and in any amount into your body during a detox is unproductive and defeats the purpose of living a drug-free life. For this reason, some patients choose a completely holistic opiate detox experience, going cold turkey without any medication of any kind to assist them.
Note: Though few or no medications are used during this process, it is not recommended to attempt a cold turkey opiate detox at home. Medical supervision and monitoring ensures that you have medical care if you need it and helps you to remain focused on your recovery and avoid relapse.
