There are a number of different medications available to treat opiate detox medically. Naltrexone, for example, is used to stop the effect of opiates in the event of an overdose but is not often used for long-term treatment. More commonly, methadone or buprenorphine may be prescribed to help you more slowly stop using opiates, thus helping you to avoid an intense onslaught of opiate withdrawal symptoms. Opiate detox clinics can provide you with medication treatments as well as counseling and medical support in the event of complications.

Michael’s House offers opiate detox clinic services in an inpatient opiate rehab setting. We provide long-term treatment and sober living services for those who are ready to commit to changing their lives and leaving active opiate addiction behind them.

Opiate Detox Clinics: Methadone

Methadone is a synthetic opiate that is FDA-approved for the treatment of opiate addiction. Administered in liquid form daily, you take your methadone dose in front of a medical provider. The drug is strictly regulated and requires that you “earn” the right to take doses of your medication home with you over time with continued attendance at mandatory group meetings and repeated “clean” tests that prove you are not abusing the drug.

An opiate detox clinic can provide you with a methadone opiate detox treatment as well as counseling support for real opiate addiction treatment that is lasting.

Opiate Detox Clinics: Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine is the only drug approved by the FDA solely for the treatment of opiate addiction. It can be prescribed by a regular doctor outside of an opiate detox clinic, but the doctor must be certified in its dispensation and not all are.

Buprenorphine is prescribed in lozenge form and you may take it daily or every other day depending upon the dose and your doctor’s prescription. You cannot overdose on “bupe” or Suboxone, but it can make you sick if you don’t take it exactly as the doctor ordered. It’s been shown to be highly effective in the continued maintenance of opiate detox at opiate detox clinics and may even have some anti-depressant effects.

Opiate Detox Clinics: Which One is Right For You?

Determining whether methadone or buprenorphine is more appropriate for your situation is something you need to do with your medical team at your opiate detox clinic. Depending upon the dose of heroin or opiate painkillers you are at when you begin opiate treatment, methadone or Suboxone may be indicated. In general, high dose users of heroin and other opiates require methadone at the beginning of their opiate detox and those addicted to lower dosages may take advantage of a Suboxone treatment.
