Opiate Detox Options
If you are trying to recover from opiate addiction (i.e., heroin addiction, OxyContin addiction, hydrocodone addiction and addiction to other prescription painkillers), then you need to start your opiate rehab experience with opiate detox. You have two different medical detox options -Suboxone treatment and methadone maintenance -or a cold turkey option to choose from. The type of opiate detox you ultimately choose will be determined by your drug of choice, your history with addiction, your prior attempts to quit using if any, and the dose you are taking when you start opiate rehab.
Michael’s House offers an inpatient opiate rehab program that includes opiate detox as well as psychotherapeutic addiction treatment. Contact us today to learn more.
Opiate Detox Options: Suboxone Treatment
Suboxone treatment is one of the most recent opiate detox options. Suboxone is the only drug on the market approved by the FDA for nothing but opiate addiction treatment. Prescribed by a doctor -provided that doctor is certified to dispense the drug -it is also the only opiate addiction treatment method that you essentially do on your own with medical supervision. It is easily incorporated into outpatient or inpatient opiate rehab and is appropriate for those with low-dose addictions.
Opiate Detox Options: Methadone Maintenance
Methadone maintenance has been the most popular form of opiate addiction treatment since its inception in the 1970s. For some, this is a short-term dedicated detox that occurs over a few weeks or months. For others, it becomes a staple in their lives and assists them in remaining clean and sober for years. A “blocking dose” is 80 milligrams; those with high-dose addictions and a history of frequent relapse often benefit from taking methadone at this dose for long periods until they find balance in their recovery and then slowly lower the dose until they are completely drug-free.
Opiate Detox Options: “Cold Turkey” Detox
“Cold turkey” detox is one of the more common forms of opiate detox because it provides a short, swift journey to the end goal: living without physical dependence upon opiates. Some opt for a “cold turkey” detox without medication of any kind. The idea behind this approach is that pharmaceutical assistance of any kind is only replacing opiate toxins with more toxins. Others prefer to use non-addictive medications to ease their experience of withdrawal symptoms. For example, if you experience muscle aches or headaches, you would be given medications that address those symptoms. If you feel nauseous or are vomiting, you’ll be given anti-nausea medications. Those who experience insomnia will be given medications to help them sleep. None of these medications will in any way prolong your experience of withdrawal and, in some cases, treatment can shorten your detox and help you get over the withdrawal symptoms more quickly.
