OxyContin Addiction and Teens
Addiction to prescription drugs like OxyContin is a problem that has been on the rise among teenagers especially for the past decade. Easy access to their parents' and grandparents' medicine cabinets in addition to a crackdown on over the counter medications and spray paints commonly used for illicit purposes among teens has made prescription OxyContin one of the biggest drug problems for teens.
If your teenager is over the age of 18 and is addicted to OxyContin, we can help at Michael's House. Contact our call center at if you have any questions about how we can help your teen break free from OxyContin addiction.
Teen OxyContin Addiction: How to Recognize It
Determining whether or not your teenager is addicted to OxyContin may be difficult. The moodiness, tendency to sleep and unkempt appearance that often signify drug addiction can also be attributed to normal teenage mood swings. There are other clues you can look for, however, that may help you recognize OxyContin addiction in your child.
Changes in friends, for example, to kids who also use drugs is one sign. Paraphernalia associated with prescription drug addiction (like white powder residue on their license or rolled up dollar bills if they are snorting the crushed up pills) may be a sign. Of course, any empty pill bottles that are not their own or single pills in plastic bags or envelopes are a clear sign of the drug addiction.
OxyContin addiction particularly is hard on the body and regular use for even a short period can mean serious physical withdrawal when your teen stops taking the drug. If your teen often complains of being sick and has symptoms that include profuse sweating, shaking, headaches, nausea and/or vomiting, paranoia and agitation, then he or she could be addicted to a prescription painkiller like OxyContin.
Teen OxyContin Addiction: Intervention
After you ascertain that OxyContin addiction is indeed the issue that is your teen is struggling with, confronting them about the problem is the next step. The best way to do this may be an intervention. At an intervention, you and your teen's close family, mentors and clean and sober friends can communicate to him or her the severity of the situation and request that they accept an offer for help in the form of OxyContin rehab. There should be consequences if your teen rejects the offer, but if she or he accepts, then there should be a bed in an OxyContin rehab and immediate transportation at the ready.
Teen OxyContin Addiction: Get Help Sooner Rather Than Later
Just like with any medical issue, OxyContin addiction treatment is most successful early on. As soon as you recognize that your teenager is addicted to OxyContin, take steps to get him or her help. Even if they are unwilling to go, research shows that they can still benefit from the treatment. The sooner they get the help they need, the sooner they can get back home and begin again without OxyContin.
