Finding alcoholism treatment services while in the throes of alcoholism is not an easy thing to do. With just a little bit of preparation, however, today can be the first day of your recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. All you need is a few supplies, a few phone calls and a little patience to get the alcoholism treatment services you need.

Supplies

If you know that you want to enroll in alcohol rehab, you can begin the process of recovery before you enter. Minimizing your drinking at home should be accompanied, however, with a few supplies. Paper, pen, a computer or a phone book, and a copy of your insurance policy will all come in handy.

The one supply you won’t need is any kind of alcohol or addictive substance. Minimize that as much as possible. If you experience withdrawal symptoms and you are concerned for your medical health, consult with your doctor first.

If you feel like you are in the midst of a medical emergency as a result of stopping drinking, call 911.

Phone Calls

First things first: make a list of the people you need to call and find their numbers online or in the phone book. You will need to call your insurance company to clarify what alcoholism treatment services are covered by your insurance policy. You will need to contact your work and take some time off for treatment. You may need to arrange for family members to care for your children and/ or pets. If you have any chronic medical disorders or psychological issues that require medication, you may need to call your doctors for a consult. Next, call the alcoholism treatment services that you are interested in attending and find out the specifics of their program, if they have space available, and when you can start.

Patience

Most centers have a waiting list. Some request that you be completely free of alcohol and drugs for at least 24 hours before you. Depending upon whether or not you have insurance or co-occurring disorders, you may need to get some paperwork in order before you take advantage of alcoholism treatment services. If you have dependent elderly family members or children or if you are currently working, you may need to make arrangements for while you are gone. This may take a few days and in the meantime, you have to stick to your goals, minimize your drinking and have patience.

If you do have to wait, a library card or a membership to a video rental place might help you pass the time without relapse.
