There is more than one way to recover after Vicodin addiction. In fact, there are three different types of residential Vicodin detox options: long-term medicated detox, short-term medication-assisted detox and cold turkey detox.

No matter which type of residential Vicodin detox you choose, it is important to note that it is not recommended that you stop taking prescription opiate painkillers like Vicodin without the benefit of medical assistance and supervision.

At Michael’s House, we offer a range of Vicodin detox options in our residential addiction treatment program. Contact us today for more information.

Residential Vicodin Detox: Long-Term Medicated Detox

Long-term medicated Vicodin detox gives you the opportunity to take your time and take Vicodin detox one step at a time. By using medications like methadone or buprenorphine, you can avoid the intense onslaught of initial Vicodin withdrawal symptoms that come in the first few days of recovery. Instead, you can take these drugs that work somewhat like “opiate replacement” vehicles; that is, you can stop taking Vicodin immediately and begin taking these other drugs instead and experience only a sliver of the symptoms you would have felt had you stopped taking Vicodin with no medication at all.

Over time, because your goal is to become completely drug-free, you can slowly step down your dosage until you no longer need any opiate-based medication whatsoever.

Residential Vicodin Detox: Short-Term Medication-Assisted Detox

Short-term medication-assisted Vicodin detox does not offer an opiate replacement like the first option. Rather, medication is provided as you experience different symptoms that speak specifically to the withdrawal symptom itself and not the cause. For example, if you are feeling nauseous as a result of Vicodin withdrawal, you may be prescribed anti-nausea medication. If you have headaches or muscle aches, you may be given some medication to ease that particular symptom. This style of Vicodin detox is as short as cold turkey detoxes (described below) but a bit more comfortable.

Residential Vicodin Detox: Cold Turkey Detox

Vicodin is a toxin. Many people believe that any drug, be it a prescription painkiller like Vicodin or an over the counter medication like aspirin, is a toxin and that a detox in its most pure form means that you should not intake any toxins or chemicals. The idea is to go well beyond your Vicodin withdrawal symptoms and allow you to purge your body of all the synthetic chemicals that are draining your energy, your health and your spirit. To this end, a residential cold turkey Vicodin detox provides you with medical assistance only in the event that you experience complications after you stop taking the drug. While this type of residential Vicodin detox is perhaps the most uncomfortable of the three, it goes the farthest to helping you develop a whole body health and awareness as you begin the process of changing your focus and way of life.
